Campus Westend Goethe University, Linguistics and Cultural Studies
Construction of a new home for the Institute of Linguistics and Cultural Studies at Germany’s third largest university
The Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main was founded in 1914 by the citizens of Frankfurt, which makes it Germany’s oldest privately funded university. The university is centred around the Westend Campus, which has been home to a majority of the university’s faculties since 2001. The university’s central administration is also based at the Westend campus. The expansion of the Westend Campus started in 2006 and is driven by the state government of Hesse’s ambitions to create a campus to compete with elite universities in Germany and around the world. The guiding principle behind the Westend plans is the creation of a “Campus University in the Park”. The new Institute of Linguistics and Cultural Studies is part of the third construction phase. In addition to housing the institute, the building will incorporate a cross-departmental library, a cafeteria, offices for the student’s union, real estate management and the university computer centre, as well as an underground car park for 250 vehicles. The winners of the architectural competition, BLK2 Böge Lindner K2 Architekten from Hamburg, created the design. BAL was appointed to manage construction in 2018.
